9.2 Preparing the work site
The Edge Styler can be used for various applications :
• Shaping lawn edges to create a multi-level raised bed.
• Renovating an existing lawn edge.
• Creating an opening in the grass (for laying a fl owerbed for example).
• Creating an opening along hardened edges (terrace, porch edge, garden path).
• Digging shallow trenches in a lawn.
• Digging paths for burying underground wiring.
• Cutting high grass.
For each of these applications, a reference path should be plotted
out and marked on the grass prior to starting. This can be accom-
plished using a string and pickets, after which point the path can be
used as a reference line for styling the lawn edge.
The Edge Styler is equipped with a guide to the right side of the
edge dresser and can be folded down when not in use (Standard
with the Edge Styler PRO, optional on the Edge Styler STD (order
code : MA 022 001 003 )). The guide makes it easier to follow the
string for a more exact cut. The tip of the guide is located 600 mm
away from the moving blade.
9.2.1. Plotting out a reference path
Tips for plotting out a reference path are as follows:
• When edging your lawn, the styler should preferably be operated on surfaces or terrain that
is as fl at and smooth as possible in order to ensure the utmost precision in the cut. Hence,
try to move in a direction that will allow you to always keep on the grass (or otherwise, always
keep on a hardened surface).
• Determine where exactly you will begin styling the lawn edge or opening. Using a ruler or stick,
mark off an initial reference point approximately 60 cm away from the starting point (with
pickets) and tie it off with rope.
• If the path is a straight line, then you will need to mark off a second reference point at the end
of this strip.
• If the path runs in a free-form curve, then you should mark off a series of reference points in
order to create a polygon that matches the curvature as closely as possible.
• This procedure should be repeated until the entire zone to be styled has been plotted out
completely.
