11 Configuring OSPF
In this Chapter
This chapter explains how to configure the OSPF routing protocol in the
PR2000. OSPF is a newer and more sophisticated replacement for the RIP
protocol. Small networks normally operate only with RIP or with no routing
protocol at all. Only users using OSPF need to read this chapter.
11.1 What is OSPF?
OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) is a routing protocol for dynamic-routing table
updates to be used within a particular Internet domain or Autonomous System
(AS - an area with common administration and a specific routing strategy).
OSPF is based on the Dijkstra link-state algorithm and is far more complex to
implement and configure than traditional RIP protocols.
OSPF has two main advantages over RIP as a routing protocol: it converges
and propagates routing changes faster in complex networks and it uses less
network throughput for updates.
Because of the relative complexity of OSPF, it is a good option only for users
who have networks complex enough to justify its implementation.
It is out of the scope of this Installation Guide to explain OSPF design and
implementation. The next sections describe the configuration and assume that
the user is familiar with the OSPF protocol and its concepts.
11.2 Configuring OSPF in the PR2000
The OSPF configuration can be divided in two parts:
•
Per-interface. OSPF is enabled and OSPF areas are created when
you enable OSPF as the routing protocol for one of the router
interfaces and configure the per-interface parameters.
•
Global. There are configuration parameters that are global to
OSPF in the PR2000.
