3 Getting the Ethernet LAN interface to work
In this Chapter
This chapter helps you to configure the Ethernet LAN interface and make sure
that it is working. At the end, you should be able to ping and telnet between the
router and any host on the LAN. Once the Ethernet LAN configuration is
completed, you can proceed from either the console or from a server on the
LAN using telnet.
3.1 Required Information
Before starting the Ethernet LAN configuration, you should know the basic
parameters related to the network protocol you are using:
•
IP (IP address, subnet mask)
•
IPX (Ethernet encapsulation type, LAN network number)
3.2 Configuring the Ethernet interface
From the main menu, select Config->Interface->Ethernet. You will see a menu
that looks like this:
Cyclades-PR2000 (PR2000 name) Ethernet Interface Menu
1. Encapsulation
2. Network Protocol
3. Routing Protocol
4. Traffic Control
Select option ==>
For IP, unless you are using a very special configuration, there is no need to
configure Encapsulation for Ethernet (this menu allows you to disable the
Interface or change the MAC address of the interface).
If IPX software is activate in your router, you should select Encapsulation and
select the Encapsulation type for IPX to be the one being used in your
network (leave the Ethernet interface enabled and MAC address untouched).
The options are Ethernet-II, 802.2, SNAP or 802.3, depending on how your IPX
network is configured.
