7. Reverse the multimeter probes and note the reading. The multimeter should indicate approximately 540 mV,
however, a range of 400-700 mV is acceptable.
8. If the readings obtained in the previous steps are incorrect, replace the diode. See Diode Removal on page
12-12.

1. Disconnect battery and spark plug wire(s). See Disconnecting the Battery – Gasoline Vehicles on page 1-4.
2. Raise the hood, remove the access panel and disconnect the multi-pin connector from the key switch.
3. Disconnect the white bullet connector in the carburetor solenoid red wire (Figure 11-21, Page 11-23) .
4. Disconnect the 18-gauge purple wire (w40) from the oil light.
5. Disconnect the 18-gauge blue wire (w46) from the fuel gauge/hour meter.
6. Disconnect the 18-gauge green wire (w30) from the park brake limit switch mounted on the side of the park
brake handle assembly.
7. Disconnect the 18-gauge black wire (w118) from the fuel level sending unit.
8. Set the multimeter to the diode test function.
9. Connect the black (–) probe of the multimeter to the 18-gauge black wire (w118) at the fuel level sending unit
(Figure 11-23, Page 11-24) .
10. Connect the red (+) probe of the multimeter to the male side of the carburetor solenoid bullet connector.
11. The reading should indicate an over limit (no continuity). If the diode conducts current (shows continuity) with
the meter probes connected as described, the diode has failed and must be replaced. See Diode Removal on
page 12-12.
12. Reverse the multimeter probes and note the reading (Figure 11-24, Page 11-24) . The multimeter should indicate
approximately 540 mV, however, a range of 400-700 mV is acceptable.
13. If the readings obtained in the previous steps are incorrect, replace the diode. See Diode Removal on page
12-12.
