DESCRIPTION

Inlet air enters the engine through a plenum chamber formed around
the compressor inlet bellmouth where it is directed to the compressor.
The compressor consists of six axial compressor stages and one
centrifugal stage, assembled as an integral unit. It provides a
compression ratio of 7.0:1.
The compressed air is discharged through the scroll type diffuser into
two external ducts, which convey the air to the combustion section.
Air enters the single combustion liner through holes in the liner dome
and skin. This air is mixed with fuel sprayed from the fuel nozzle to
support combustion. The combustion gases move out of the
combustion liner to the first stage gas producer turbine nozzle.
The gas producer and power turbines are mounted between the
combustion section and the power and accessories gearbox. The two-
stage gas producer turbine drives the compressor and accessories
gear train. The two-stage power turbine furnishes the output power of
the engine through the power gear train. The expanded gas
discharges through the twin ducts of the exhaust collector in a
downward direction.
A two-stage helical gear set in the engine power and accessory
gearbox reduces rotational speed from 33,290 RPM at 100% N
2
power
turbine speed to 6016 RPM at the power take off (PTO) gear. A flex
coupled drive shaft is connected to the Soloy gear reduction system
which uses a single-stage helical gear set in the propeller gearbox to
reduce rotational speed from 6016 RPM at the input drive to 1810
RPM at the propeller output at a reduction ratio of 3.32:1. The engine
is rated at 418 shaft horsepower on a standard day at sea level, with
101.4 PSI of indicated torque at 1810 propeller (N
P
) RPM. The speed
of the gas producer (N
1
) is the true speed of the compressor which is
51,490 RPM at 101% N
1
.
The power turbine gear train drives the propeller tachometer generator
and the power turbine governor. The compressor, fuel pump, gas
producer tachometer generator, gas producer fuel control, starter
generator and the vacuum pump are driven by the gas producer gear
train. The rest of the accessories are driven by the Soloy propeller
reduction gearbox. These include the propeller governor, propeller
overspeed governor, propeller gearbox oil pump and a secondary
vacuum pump for instrument air.
The Turbine Pac oil supply is contained in a separate tank. The
system has a capacity of 9 U.S. quarts and is provided with a dipstick.
