16. RS-485 communications
Use the optional RS-485 communication interface in conjunction with the MD485 to interface a
data logger with one or more cameras or when a long cable length is required. Refer to the
MD485 Manual for additional information. If multiple cameras are connected to an MD485,
offset the capture times of the photos so that only one camera is transmitting a file at any given
time.
To use RS-485 on the web interface, go to Settings > File Transfer > PakBus®.
The camera can download photos or video using an RS-485 port and the PakBus® protocol. An
MD485 is required to interface the camera to a data logger. The following items are required for
RS-485 PakBus® communications and can be confirmed by either the web interface of the
Device Configuration Utility:

Confirm that the PakBus® port parameter of the Communications Setting is RS-485.

Set the RS-485 baud rate to match the baud rate of the device being connected to the
camera.
l
Set Communication Settings > PakBus® Address to a unique value in the PakBus®
network.
l
Set the PakBus® Destination Address of the device in which the camera is sending photos.
l
Include PakBus® Security Code, as required.
17. Send via PakBus®: PakBus®
communications
The CCFC camera uses the PakBus® protocol to send photo or video files from the camera to a
Campbell Scientific data logger or other PakBus® compatible device. The

PakBus® Graph can be used to change the configuration of a camera. PakBus® Graph is
discussed in Send via PakBus®: PakBus® graph operations (p. 112). Refer to the LoggerNet
manual or Help for more details.
PakBus® can also control specific operational parameters and transfer variables or text between
the data logger and camera. When a photo or video file is ready to be transmitted, the camera
will initiate communications and send the photo or video using the selected serial interface.
