Starting the Engine
Important:
Do not engage the starter for more
than 5 seconds at a time. If the engine fails to
start, wait 15 seconds between attempts. Failure
to follow these instructions can burn out the
starter motor.
Note:
You may need to repeat the cycle for starting
the engine when you start it for the first time after you
have filled a completely empty fuel system with fuel.
1. Move the fuel-shutoff valve to the O
PEN
position
( Figure 13 ).

2. Move the throttle up from the S
LOW
position,
approximately 1/3 of the way ( Figure 14 ).

3. Position the choke lever as follows ( Figure 13 ):
•
To start a cold engine, move the choke lever
to the C
LOSED
position.
•
To start a warm engine, move the choke
lever to the O
PEN
position.
4. Connect the kill cord to the operator presence
sensor (
Figure 14 ).
5. Rotate the key switch to the O
N
position ( Figure
15 ).

6. Turn the key to the S
TART
position, and hold it
there until the engine starts ( Figure 15 ).
If the engine does not start within 5 seconds,
release the key, and wait at least 15 seconds
before operating the starter again.
Note:
Using the electric starter for more than 5
seconds at a time will overheat the starter motor
and can damage it.
Note:
If the choke lever is set to the C
LOSED
position to start the engine, gradually move it
back toward the O
PEN
position as the engine
warms up. If the engine stalls or hesitates, move
the choke lever back toward the C
LOSED
position
until the engine runs smooth. Allow the engine
to warm up, then move the choke lever to the
O
PEN
position.
7. Wrap the kill cord around your leg and secure
the cord to itself.
