Press the c lutc h p ed al all the w ay d ow n
eac h tim e you shift, p ressing the
m anual- shift gear lever into its p rop er
end p osition.
Dep ress the c lutc h w hen starting the
vehic le, too, otherw ise, loc kout w ill
p revent the engine from starting if the
c lutc h is not d ep ressed .
The shift lever's neutral gate (d ot in the
illustration) is loc ated b etw een 3rd and
4th gear.
When shifting from eac h gear through
"Neutral," the shift lever returns auto-
m atic ally to this neutral p osition
b ec ause of its sp ring load ing.

Reverse
Selec t "Reverse" only w hen the vehic le
is c om p letely stop p ed . Press the shift
lever to the left to overc om e the resis-
tanc e.
As you d o this, the b ac kup lam p s w ill
turn on autom atic ally w hen the ignition
key is in p osition 2.
Do not hold the vehic le in p lac e on
slop es b y slip p ing or "rid ing" the
c lutc h. Use the p arking b rake instead .
A slip p ing c lutc h inc reases c lutc h
w ear.
