Break- in procedures
To ensure that your vehic le p rovid es
m axim um ec onom y throughout a long
servic e life, w e req uest that you
ob serve the follow ing suggestions:
Engine and axle drive
Up to 1,200 m iles (2,000 km ):
Drive at varying engine sp eed s and
road sp eed s, b ut d o not exc eed
4,500 rp m and the follow ing road
sp eed s d uring this initial p eriod :
B M W X5 3.0i: 100 m p h (160 km / h)
B M W X5 4.4i: 106 m p h (170 km / h)

sp eed lim its.
Refrain from using full throttle and avoid
p ressing the ac c elerator b eyond the
kic kd ow n p oint.
Onc e you have d riven 1,200 m iles
(2,000 km ), engine and vehic le sp eed s
c an grad ually b e inc reased .
You should also c om p ly w ith these
b reak- in p roc ed ures if the engine or
one of the axle d rives is rep lac ed later
in the c ourse of the vehic le servic e life.
Tires
Due to tec hnic al fac tors assoc iated
w ith their m anufac ture, tires d o not
ac hieve their full trac tion p otential until
an initial b reak- in p eriod has elap sed .
For this reason, d rive w ith extra c are
d uring the initial 200 m iles (300 km ).

When the vehic le is op erated on
w et or slushy road s, a w ed ge of
w ater m ay form b etw een the tire and
the road surfac e. This p henom enon is
referred to as aq uap laning, or hyd ro-
p laning, and c an lead to p artial or
c om p lete loss of trac tion, vehic le
c ontrol and b raking effec tiveness.

Brake system
Ap p rox. 300 m iles (500 km ) m ust
elap se b efore the b rake p ad s and d isc s
ac hieve the op tim al p ad - surfac e and
w ear p atterns req uired for troub le- free
op eration and long servic e life later on.
To b reak in the sep arate p arking b rake
d rum s, ap p ly the p arking b rake lightly
w hen c oasting to a stand still (at a traffic
signal, for instanc e), p rovid ed that
traffic c ond itions allow you to d o so.
To avoid c orrosion, rep eat this p roc e-
d ure from tim e to tim e.
The b rake lam p s d o not light up
w hen the p arking b rake is ap p lied .
Vac uum for the b rake system servo unit
on your B M W is availab le only w hen the
engine is running. When you m ove the
vehic le w ith the engine shut off – w hen
tow ing, for instanc e – sub stantially
higher levels of p ed al forc e w ill b e
req uired to b rake the vehic le.
