Charging the battery
Charge the b attery in the vehic le only
w hen the engine is not running. Use the
c onnec tions p rovid ed in the engine
c om p artm ent (for c orrec t c onnec tions,
refer to "Jum p - starting" on p age

).
The servic e life sp ec ified for the
b attery c an b e ac hieved only if it
is alw ays kep t ad eq uately c harged .
Have the c harge c ond ition of the
b attery c hec ked freq uently if the vehic le
is used p rim arily for d riving short
d istanc es.

B efore p erform ing any w ork on
the elec tric al system , d isc onnec t
the c ab le from the negative term inal. If
you d o not, short c irc uits c an c reate the
risk of fire or p ersonal injury.

If you p lan to p ark the vehic le longer
than 4 w eeks, have the b attery d isc on-
nec ted from the vehic le's elec tric al
system b y d isc onnec ting the c ab le from
the negative term inal. Then have the
b attery c harged w ith an ap p rop riate
b attery c harger.
If the vehic le w ill not b e d riven for a
p eriod longer than 12 w eeks, have the
b attery rem oved , c harged and store it
in a c lean and c ool (frost- free) area.
Rec harge the b attery at least every
three m onths d uring storage. Also,
rec harge the b attery b efore it is
installed . If you fail to d o so, it w ill not
b e servic eab le. Every tim e the b attery is
d isc harged , esp ec ially over extend ed
p eriod s, its servic e life is red uc ed .
Do not d isc onnec t the b attery
w hen the engine is running. If
you d o so, the ensuing voltage surge
w ill d am age the vehic le's onb oard elec -
tronic s.
Do not m ake any m od ific ations in the
w ires to the p ositive term inal. If you d o
so, the p rotec tive func tion of the safety
b attery term inal is no longer ensured .
Rep air and d isp osal m ust b e p erform ed
b y trained tec hnic ians only.

Return used b atteries to a rec y-
c ling p oint or your B M W c enter.
M aintain the b attery in an up right p osi-
tion for transp ort and storage. Sec ure
the b attery against tilting d uring trans-
p ort.
