SIM Card or your SIM card is not inserted correctly.
You can also quickly check if you have a SIM card by removing the back cover of your
BlackBerry and taking a look. See page 5 for a picture of where the SIM Card Slot is
located.
Calling Your BlackBerry Phone Company to Turn on a Temporary
International Rate Plan
Check with your wireless carrier about any voice and data roaming charges. You can try
searching on your phone company's web site, but usually, you will have to call the help
desk and specifically ask what the
voice and data roaming charges are for the country
or countries you are visiting. If you use email, SMS text, MMS messaging, web
browsing, and any other data services, you will want to specifically ask about whether or
not any of these services are charged separately.
Some phone companies offer an international rate plan that you will need to activate. In
some cases, you must activate such a plan to use your BlackBerry at all; in other cases,
activating such a plan will allow you to save some money on the standard data and
voice roaming charges. Check out these plans to see if they can save you some money
while you are on your trip, especially if you need to have access to data while you are
away.
Unlocking Your BlackBerry to Use a Foreign SIM Card
In some cases, your BlackBerry phone company does not offer special deals on
international data roaming plans or their rates are unreasonably high. In these cases, you
may want to ask your phone company to unlock your BlackBerry so that you can insert
a SIM card you purchase in the foreign country. Many times, inserting a local SIM Card
will eliminate or greatly reduce data and voice roaming charges. However, you should
check carefully the cost of placing and receiving international calls on that foreign SIM
card. Using a foreign SIM card may save you hundreds of dollars, but it's best to do
some web research or try to talk to someone who has recently traveled to the same
country for advice.
Getting into Airplane Mode
See page 16 to learn how to turn off the wireless radio and other connections on your
BlackBerry. Airlines force you to completely power down your electronic devices during
take-off and landing, but then allow use of ‘‘approved electronic devices’’ (i.e.,
BlackBerry with the radio turned off) while in flight.
