The front airbag system is trig gered:
z
depending on the severity of the
accident,
z
depending on the typ e of impa ct,
z
within the range show n in the illustration,
z
independently of the side airbag
3
and
curtain airba g systems.
Examples:
z
Impact a gainst a non-yielding obsta cle;
the front a irb ags are triggered at low
vehicle speed s,
z
Impact against a yielding obstacle (such
as another v ehicle); the front airbags a re
only trig gered at a higher vehicle speed.
When trigg ered, the driver’s and front
passenger’s airbags inflate in m illiseconds
and form sa fety cushions for the driver a nd
front passenger. Forward movement of
driver a nd front passenger is checked and
the risk of injuries to the upper body and
head thereby substantia lly red uced.
z
No im pairment of v iew w ill oc cur, as
airbags inflate and deflate so quickly.
The front airbag system will not be
triggered in the ev ent of:
z
the ignition being switched off,
z
minor frontal collisions,
z
accidents in which the vehicle overturns,
z
collisions involving a side or rear-impa ct
where it would not be of benefit to the
occupants.

Warning
The front airbag system provides
optimum p rotection when the seat, seat
belt, back rest and head restraint are
correctly adjusted.
Adjust the driver's sea t according to the
occupant's height such that, with the
driver sitting upright, the steering wheel is
held in the area of its up per spokes w ith
the driver's arms slig htly bent.
The driver’s seat should be as far b ack as
possible without compromising the
driver’s ability to reach the p edals,
steering wheel or controls.
The front passenger’s sea t should be as
far bac k as possible, with the backrest
upright. Do not place the head, body,
hands or feet on the cover of the airba g
system.
Do not place objects, c hildren or pets in
the area in w hich the airbags infla te.
9
Warning
Seat belts must therefore always be w orn.
The front airbag system serves to
supplement the three-p oint sea t belts.
If you do not wear your seat belt, you risk
being seriously injured, or even thrown
from the vehicle, in the event of an
accident.
The belts help to maintain occupants in
the correct seating position for the front
airbag system to provide effective
protection in the event of an accident.
