Connection of the IO device with media redundancy
IO devices (1 interface module for each IO device) are connected to an IO controller in a ring
topology. All nodes of the ring must support the "Media redundancy" function. The IO controller
must be configured as an MRP manager.
To set up a ring topology with media redundancy, you must join both free ends of a linear
network topology in the same device. Closing the linear bus topology to form a ring is achieved
with two ports (ring ports) of a device in the ring. At least one device of the ring takes over the
role of the redundancy manager. All other devices in the ring are redundancy clients.

The following figure shows examples for the connection of the IO devices in the PROFINET IO
system:
