Power budget calculation
Introduction
A power budget calculation is performed in order to ensure the operation of the modules in
the configuration. The power budget calculation balances the power provided by the
interface module and the power supply (PS) module(s) via the backplane bus, against the
required power for the I/O modules. The power budget calculation is the basis for the
creation of the power segments (see chapter Setting up power segments (Page 36)).
●
If you use STEP 7 (TIA Portal) V12 and above to plan your configuration, you will be
supported in the power budget calculation with corresponding advice.
●
If you use the GSD file for ET 200MP to plan your configuration, you must perform the
power budget calculation manually.
Basics
Each module in the system is assigned a power:
●
The interface module provides power (if it is supplied on the front side with 24 V DC)
●
The power supply (PS) module provides power (if it is supplied on the front side and is
switched on),
●
The interface module consumes power (if it is not supplied on the front side with 24 V
DC)
●
The I/O modules consume power
In order to operate the configuration and its modules, the power budget must be positive.
Take care during planning already, that the power fed into the backplane bus is always
greater than or equivalent to the power drawn.
The power fed into the backplane bus from the interface module and power supply module
can be found in the technical specifications in the corresponding Product Manual.
The power drawn from the backplane bus by an I/O module or the interface module can be
found in the technical specifications in the corresponding Product Manual.
Note
We recommend that the interface module should always be supplied on the front side with
24 V DC, because the power from both the power supply (PS) module and the integrated
power supply of the interface module is then available for the I/O modules (combined power
of PS feed power + IM feed power in power segment 1) with the operation of a power supply
(PS) module before the interface module.
