ENGINE STARTING PROCEDURES
Check the work area to make sure all personnel and equipment are clear of the machine. Before starting the
machine, the operator should sound the horn to warn others that the machine is going to be started.
Start-up and shutdown procedures for most diesel engines are generally the same. Therefore, use the following
procedures except where specific differences are noted. (See the original equipment manufacturer [OEM] engine
manual for detailed procedures.)
Starting the Engine
Perform the following steps to start the engine.
NOTE:
See “Cold-Weather Operation” on page 4-15 for additional information.
1. Set the hydraulic lockout control lever (1) to the locked
(closed) position.
NOTE:
See “Hydraulic Lockout Control Lever” on
page 3-19.
WARNING!
Never attempt to start the machine if it has been locked out by maintenance personnel; this
could result in death or serious injury. If in doubt, contact the maintenance supervisor.
WARNING!
Diesel engine exhaust can be harmful to your health or even fatal. Operate the engine only in a
well-ventilated area, or vent the exhaust to the outside.
CAUTION!
Do not spray starting fluid into the air inlet. The spray will contact the heater elements and
could explode and cause injury.
