split pins 25.14 in the holes - Figs. 258 - 260. The schoo-
ner boom is now complete and ready for painting.
-
Assemble parts 25.15 - 25.19 as shown in Fig. 260 and
screw the assembly to the boom at the enlarged notch; see
also Fig. 265.
Mainmast boom
-
Trim the beech dowel connecting piece 25.20 to fit in the
mainmast boom 25.21, push it half-way in and glue it in
place.
-
Cut off the end-piece 25.22 from the narrow end of the
remaining thick-wall GRP tube; it should be 520 mm long.
Sand down the beech dowel connecting piece until the
end-piece fits on it. If the outside diameter of the end-piece
is larger than that of the aluminium tube, shorten the GRP
tube by a suitable amount. Epoxy the end-piece to the
connecting piece, taking care that the tubes line up accu-
rately. Cut down the end-piece to a length of 240 mm - Fig.
261.
-
Glue the jaw plate 25.23 to the boom, and drill eight 1.2
mm Ø holes in it as shown. Insert the split pin 25.24 in the
plate.
-
Glue the first lacing rail 25.25 to the jaw plate at right
angles - Figs. 262 and 263.
-
Cut down the second lacing rail to a length of 245 mm and
trim it to fit snugly. File out the sixth notch from the rear to
accommodate the sheet fitting, as described for the scho-
oner boom. Glue the lacing rail in place.
-
Drill the three 1 mm Ø holes in the reefing rails at the sta-
ted positions. Glue the reefing rails in place, continue the
holes into the boom and glue the nails 25.27 in the holes -
Fig. 263.
-
Make the peak ring 25.28 from 0.2 x 5 x 20 mm brass strip
and glue it to the peak of the boom.
-
Trim the plug 25.29 to fit and glue it in the end of the boom.
-
Drill 1.5 mm Ø holes for the four remaining split pins 25.24,
and install the two rear split pins.
-
When the boom has been painted fit the pulley blocks
25.30 on the two remaining split pins and install them as
shown in Fig. 264.
-
Attach the main sheet fitting - Fig. 265.

-
Push a ring 26.1 onto each of the thin-walled tapered GRP
tubes and glue them in place. Cut the schooner gaff 26.2
and the mainmast gaff 26.3 to length as shown in Fig. 266.
-
Trim the dowel plugs 26.4 - 26.6 to size and push them into
the ends of the tubes to seal them.
-
Glue the peak ring 26.7 on the mainmast gaff.
-
Drill the 1.5 mm Ø holes for the lugs 26.8 in the thicker end
of the tube. Slip one screw 26.9 through the lug 26.8 and
fit it in the hole drilled at the stated dimension; you can now
mark the position of the remaining holes. Fix this assemb-
ly together temporarily using the screws 26.9 and nuts
26.10 - Fig. 267.
-
Drill the holes for the split pins 26.11 (1.5 Ø) and 26.12 (1
Ø) in both gaffs at the stated positions. Drill the holes in the
rings on the mainmast gaff; note that they should be offset
as shown.
-
Shorten the split pins and glue them in the holes to com-
plete the gaffs; they can then be painted - Fig. 268.
-
Attach the pulley blocks to the gaff fittings 26.14 using the
split pins 26.11.
-
Attach the gaff fitting for the schooner gaff using the lugs
26.8, the screw 26.15 and nuts 26.16. Complete the
assembly as shown.
-
Mount one pulley block 26.13 and the S-hook 26.17 on the
mainmast gaff using the screw 26.18.
-
Cut off the projecting screw end and secure the nuts 26.16
with a drop of cyano - Fig. 269.
-
Splice the crow’s feet 26.19 to the gaffs, fitting one pulley
block 26.20 on each - Fig. 270.
