2.9.1
Rack Mounting
The
Linx DVI Switcher
is designed to operate in a rack mounted configuration. This should
be done before making any cable connections. Use screws compatible with the rack to
secure the unit. The rails for rear support provided with the unit must be used.
2.9.2
Video Inputs and Outputs
The quality of DVI copper cables is important to the performance when long lengths are
used. Cable using 24 AWG conductors may provide good results up to 50 meters with
equalization.
The
Linx DVI Switcher
can supply up to 500 mA of 5 VDC power to a single output channel
or a total 1000 mA total per module for pin-powered devices such as cable extenders,
eliminating the need for external power supplies.
2.9.3
Control Connections
Use of all the
Linx DVI Switcher
commands and function requires connection through the
RS-232 or 10/100 BASE-T Ethernet port.

Connection to the 10/100 BASE-T Ethernet port uses a cable with RJ-45 connectors.
■
Direct connection
— Use an Ethernet crossover cable. Computers that are
set up to communicate on the network are typically configured to have a
dynamic IP address. In this configuration, the computer is provided with a
suitable IP address by a network DHCP server. When connecting directly to
the
Linx DVI Switcher
a server will not be available; a static IP address must
be set manually on the computer. Refer to the
Changing the Linx
Switcher IP Address
in
Chapter 3
.
2.9 Installation
CAUTION
If the power supply encounters an electrical short or excessive load, it will shut
down. Power the
Linx DVI Switcher
off, correct the short or remove the excess load,
and power it on again.
Note
USB-to-Serial converters are inexpensive and widely available. Use this to connect
your USB-equipped computer to the Linx’s serial port.
