8 Startup and validation
8.1
Initial startup
Qualified personnel
Startup may only be carried out by qualified personnel.
Steps for startup
To start up the Smart Element, proceed as follows:
1. Set the safety address.

2. Mount the Smart Element on the backplane.

3. Connect the cables for the bus system and supply voltage.
4. Wire the inputs according to your application.

5. Switch on the operating voltage. Use the LEDs on the Smart Element to check that the
Smart Element starts up without any errors.

6. Carry out the necessary parameterization.

7. Program the safety function.

8. Perform a function test and validation. Check whether the safety function responds as
planned.
8.2
Restart after device replacement
Once the Smart Element has been replaced, proceed as described for initial startup:

The parameterization of the previous Smart Element remains the same and is transmitted
to the new Smart Element when the system is started.
8.3
Validation
Carry out a safety validation every time you make a safety-related modification.
