Mounting Originals on the External Drum
If an original wraps more than half way round the
drum, the space between the edges of the
original should be filled with material of the same
length and thickness.
•
Multiple originals should be evenly distributed
around the circumference of the drum.
•
Avoid scanning excessively heavy originals.
Mixing Media on the
Drum
Any combination of transparencies, negatives and
reflection copy originals may be mounted together on
the drum.
Mounting
Transparencies and
Negatives
It is very important to mount transparencies and
negatives so as to prevent
Newton’s rings
interference between the drum surface and the
original. This is done by using a proprietary
mounting spray, powder or oil.
For small originals (such as 35 mm) with enlarge-
ments of 400% or more, oil mounting should be
used. This is because the size of the particles in
powder and spray may start to affect the pixels
making up the scanned image. The oil film also helps
to eliminate the effect of any surface scratches on
the original.
For larger originals or enlargements of less than
400%, powder or spray mounting may be used.
This is more convenient and cleaner than using oil.
Originals which are 57 mm (2
1
/
4
ins) square may be
mounted with either oil, powder or spray depending
on the degree of enlargement required.
