APIPA
The HTRD400 System uses Microsoft APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing) policy to
enable each device (HTRD400 Recorder, HTCD Digital Camera, or PC) to automatically
determine a unique IP address for itself in the absence of DHCP (Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol) network services.
When you connect a PC or laptop to n HTRD400 Recorder, Microsoft Windows uses APIPA
to automatically determine a unique IP address for the PC. In the Windows environment,
APIPA first waits for over a minute for a response from a DHCP server. If no DHCP server
responds in that time, it automatically chooses an APIPA address.
If you have a PC or laptop that you use exclusively to connect to an HTRD400 Recorder and
you are familiar with how to set a static IP address using the Windows Network Settings
Control Panel (or have access to an IT network administrator for assistance), then you may
find it convenient to set a static APIPA address for the dedicated PC. A static IP address
means that the PC can quickly establish a session with an HTRD400 Recorder after you
have physically connected to it.
