2006 Water Systems — Section 6 • 117
ColD Weather USe
A recreational vehicle is not designed for extended use in below freezing (32° F/0° C) weather; however,
problems may not occur as long as the temperature does not drop too low. Interior water lines, fixtures, water
storage tanks and pumps are normally protected from moderate freezing temperatures as long as the furnace is
operating. Exposed drains may freeze quickly. If in doubt about what temperatures the recreational vehicle will
tolerate, winterize the recreational vehicle.
NOTE:
Water purifiers and water heaters all use domestic water and should be drained and stored
in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendation for winterization.
The method chosen to winterize the recreational vehicle and water lines is up to the owner. The lines can be
air blown to remove standing water or the lines can be filled with an approved FDA RV antifreeze. Either way,
all interior and exterior faucets need to be opened and closed, one at a time, to be checked. All low point drains
should be opened and the holding tanks emptied.
Winterizing
Using Air Pressure
Access to an air compressor and an adapter is needed to connect the air line to the water system for use of
air pressure to winterize the recreational vehicle. Adapters can be purchased from most RV supply stores. When
hooked to the water lines the pressure should NOT exceed 40 psi. Higher pressure can damage the lines.
1. Drain the fresh water tank by opening drain valve located under the
recreational vehicle. Look for drain decal on the side of the recre-
ational vehicle.
2. Open low-point drains. Drains are located underneath trailer. Look
for drain decal on the side of the recreational vehicle.
3. Let all the water evacuate. Turn on the water pump and allow it to
run for 30 seconds to one minute so that all water is cleared out of
the pump. The pump switch is located on the monitor panel.
4. Remove the water heater drain plug and open the pressure release
valve located in the water heater outside compartment.
5. After draining the water from the recreational vehicle, hook an air
hose to the city water connection located on the roadside of the
recreational vehicle. Blow air through the water lines until no more
water can be seen coming out of the drain lines. DO NOT exceed 40
psi in the water lines.
6. Open the water heater bypass valve located next to the water heater. Close the water heater hot and cold
water valves.
7. Replace the water heater drain plug and close the pressure release valve. Open all the faucets (including
the outside shower) one at a time, while the air is on, to clear water from faucet supply lines. Drain the
inside shower as well.
8. Flush the toilet until the water stops running.
9. Unhook the air hose.
