6.3.2 Electric Thermit
®
igniter
The device produces an electric voltage pulse to ignite the Thermit
®
portion. This
pulse lies in a voltage range lower than 60 V. Nevertheless, misuse can cause
electrical shock.
The on-switch is used to de-energize the complete assembly.
The switch has a maximum load current of 12 A and must be
ensured that it is only actuated in a no-load state (without
gate trigger current). See Fig.2: Device setup pt.5 On-switch.
6.3.3 Fire prevention
Obey all workplace fire regulations.
6.4 Authorized persons
Thermit
®
welding is a safety-relevant activity. According to DIN EN 14730-2, every
operator must have successfully completed process-specific training at a welders
training centre accredited by the railway company, with the involvement of the
process provider. The operator must possess a „Certificate for Thermit
®
Welding of
Rails“ according to DIN EN 14730-2 point 4.1, and a „Qualification Card for Welding
Processes“ according to DIN EN 14730-2 point 4.2.
Any person working with the electric Thermit
®
igniter SMARTWELD SPARK must:
» Be older than 18 years.
» Have a solid physical constitution and in full command of his/her
mental and physical faculties; capable of fast action.
» Be well rested and not under the influence of alcohol, drugs or
medications which may impair reaction time.
