5.6 Electric power steering
(EPS)
The EPS is a power steering system which
directly uses the motor for providing torque.
It is mainly composed of a torque sensor,
a motor, a retarding mechanism and an
electronic control unit (ECU).
The EPS ECU controls the torque provided
by the EPS motor in real time by detecting the
torque applied by the driver, the vehicle speed,
the engine speed and other status signals of
the vehicle to augment the steering effort in
the best way so as to ensure the easiness of
steering at a low speed and the stability of
steering at a high speed, and to improve the
driving comfort and vehicle safety.
