NOTE
The software on the I/O modules is not updated during a hitless upgrade, only the software on the MSMs. The I/O
module software is updated when the switch reboots, or when a disabled slot is enabled.
NOTE
If you download an image to the backup MSM, the image passes through the primary MSM before the image is
downloaded to the backup MSM.
Performing a Hitless Upgrade
The steps described in this section assume the following:

You have received the new software image from Extreme Networks, and the image is on either a
TFTP server or an external compact flash memory card. See
“Downloading a New Image” on
page 591
for more information.
●
You are running ExtremeWare XOS 11.1 or later on both MSMs installed in the switch. Earlier
versions of ExtremeWare XOS do not support hitless upgrade.
Summary of Tasks
To perform a hitless upgrade to install and upgrade the ExtremeWare XOS software on your system,
complete the following tasks:

Determine your selected and booted image partitions.

Select the partition to download the image to (and the partition to boot from after installing the
image).
3
Download and install the new ExtremeWare XOS software on the backup MSM and reboot the
backup MSM, if necessary.
4
Initiate failover from the primary MSM to the backup MSM.
5
Download and install the new ExtremeWare XOS software on the new backup MSM and reboot, if
necessary.
Detailed Steps
To perform a hitless upgrade to install and upgrade the ExtremeWare XOS software on your system,
complete the following steps:

View your selected and booted partition using the following command:
show switch
Output from this command indicates, for each MSM, the selected and booted images and if they are
in the primary or the secondary partition. The selected image partition indicates which image will be
used at the next reboot. The booted image partition indicates the image used at the last reboot. It is
the active partition.

Select the partition to download the image to and download and install the new ExtremeWare XOS
software on the backup MSM using the following command:
