Close to the walls and, in particular, in the corners of
rooms and in the case of sharp-angled ceilings, air
collects which keeps the rising smoke away. It therefore
takes much longer until the smoke alary recognizes
smoke and triggers the alarm.
The smoke detector should be mounted at least 60 cm
from the corners of the room, see right.
Otherwise the smoke detector would have almost no
effect in the case of fire and only then trigger the alarm
when the smoke concentration becomes very strong!
The time available t4o save yourself and others or to
extinguish the fire is in the case curtailed drastically.
In maintaining these distances from the corners of the room, smoke detectors can also be mounted
on the walls.
Please note:
Even window sills, curtains or furniture have a strong influence on the air circulation and
thus the movement of smoke, The create an area of "quiet" air. Rising smoke only reaches
the smoke detector very late or not at all!
Whether the point of attachment has been selected well acoustically can be tried out by triggering
a test alarm (see "Installation") while a genuinely sleeping person is in the bedroom.
The smoke detector has to wake the person! It may not just be audible!
With the following rooms and places, installation of the smoke detector can be problematical:
•
Kitchen/bathroom
Kitchen vapours from cooking or the high humidity in the bathroom can trigger a false alarm.
•
Garages
Exhaust from the car, motor-bike or other combustion engines can lead to a false alarm.
•
Dusty and dirty rooms.
The measuring chamber of the smoke detector contaminates very quickly. This can cause a wrong
alarm as well as malfunction in the event of a real fire!
• Locations with strong wind movement
Smoke detection may be bad or late near windows or near fans, blowers, lamps, tube lights,
halogen transformers, chimneys etc
