2.6 Exiting the Compaq Utilities Menu
To exit the Compaq Utilities menu, follow the instructions on the screen prompts.
2.7 Power-On Self-Test (POST)
POST is a series of diagnostic tests that run automatically when the system is turned on.
Clean Boot surpresses most system messages during POST, such as memory count and non-error text
messages. If a POST error occurs, the screen will display the error message. To manually switch to
Descriptive mode during POST, press any key except F10.
Descriptive Boot shows all system messages during POST. To see the system messages every time
the computer is started, reconfigure the computer to the Descriptive Boot mode using Computer
Setup.
POST checks the following assemblies to ensure that the computer system is functioning properly:
■ Keyboard
■
System board
■ Memory modules
■ Video
■ Diskette drives
■ Hard drives
■ Power supply
■ Controllers
If POST finds an error in the system, an error condition is indicated by an audible and/or visual
message. Refer to Appendix E for POST error messages and recommended courses of action.
