2.8.2
Deskpro 4000N
To upgrade the ROM, complete the following steps:
1. Turn off the Deskpro 4000N.
2. Connect a second computer to the Deskpro 4000N using only a null modem cable connected to
the serial ports on the rear panels of both computers.
3. Turn on the second computer, start the Win 95 or Win NT, and insert the ROMPaq diskette into
the diskette drive of that computer.
✎
In order to use the second computer’s diskette drive as an external diskette drive on the Deskpro
4000N, optional Floppy Drive Server (FDS) software must be installed and running on the
second computer. The software may be downloaded from the Compaq World Wide Web Site
(www.compaq.com).
4. Turn on the Deskpro 4000N.
5. If prompted, enter the Setup password.
If the Setup password is entered correctly, the ROMPaq utility will take over and run the flash
ROM upgrade in the Deskpro 4000N.
If the Setup password is incorrectly entered, the procedure will terminate and no changes will be
made to the ROM.
CAUTION:
Do not turn the power off during a firmware upgrade. A loss of power during upgrade will
corrupt the upgrade and will require recovery using the FailSafe Boot Block ROM.
6. When the utility finishes upgrading the ROM, remove the diskette from the diskette drive,
disconnect the second computer from the Deskpro 4000N.
7. Restart the Deskpro 4000N.
2.8.3
FailSafe Boot Block ROM
The FailSafe Boot Block ROM may be used in the event of a ROM flash failure. When an invalid
system ROM is detected there will be both audible and visual cues; a series of one long and three
short beeps and the flashing of the three keyboard lights.
Deskpro 4000S
To recover the system, complete the following steps:
1. Remove any diskettes from the diskette drive and turn off the power to the computer.
2. Insert a ROMPaq diskette into the diskette drive.
3. Turn on power to the system.
If a setup password has been established, the Caps Lock light will illuminate as shown in
Table 2-6.
