2. Replacing
-As before, remove the shield and loosen the idler
mounting bolt.
-Remove the connector link from the chain and lift
off sprockets.
-Check the condition of the sprockets. If they are
cupped, they should be replaced.
-Replace with a new #80 O-Ring chain. When
determining the chain length, count the links in the
old chain. Do not measure the length.
-Check the new chain tension after initial use as
described in the first operation section 3.2.
-Replace the shield with the three 3/8” bolts.
5.4 Auger Chain Drive
The auger gearbox chain will have to be replaced
when a visual inspection shows wear appearing to
the chain or sprockets. It is far better to replace the
chain at that time than to wait longer. Waiting longer
will result in replacing the sprockets as well. The
normal cause of the chain jumping a tooth on the
sprockets is the chain is too loose. Although tight-
ening the chain will normally remedy the problem,
prolonged use under these conditions will require
chain replacement. Care must be taken to replace
the chain with a O-Ring style chain. A non O-Ring
style chain will have a much reduced life.
1. Tensioning
-Remove the lower shield by removing the three
3/8” bolts.
-Loosen the slack side idler with a 15/16” wrench.
-Slide the idler down in the slot until the chain is
tight and tighten the mounting bolt. See Fig. 20A.
-If the idler reaches the end of the slot before the
chain is tight, the chain must be replaced. Half links
are not available for the O-Ring style chain.
-Replace the shield with the three 3/8” bolts.
