Pyrometer, Optional
An optional engine pyrometer (Figure 80)
indicates the exhaust temperature, which helps
the operator get the best efficiency from the
engine. Variations in engine load can cause
the exhaust temperature to vary. For example,
high exhaust gas temperature is the result
of prolonged engine lugging or over-fueling.
If the pyrometer reading shows that exhaust
temperature exceeds normal, reduce fuel
to the engine until exhaust temperature is
reduced. Shift to a lower gear if the engine is
overloaded. Refer to the engine manufacturer’s
operator’s manual for the operational range of
the exhaust gas temperature.

Engine Oil Temperature Gauge,
Optional
Figure 81
The optional engine oil temperature
gauge (Figure 81) allows the operator
to monitor oil temperature. Refer to the
engine manufacturer’s operator’s manual
for the operational range of the engine oil
temperature. Some engine ECUs provide
this signal directly to the gateway module
via J1939; others require a separate sensor
be installed, which connects to the gateway
module.
