9. Once fully connected to the trailer, shift
the tractor into NEUTRAL and raise the
boom using the boom control lever. Raise
the boom to the desired height to allow
adequate ground clearance while towing
the trailer. After raising the trailer, apply
the tractor parking brake.
NOTICE
Always be aware of trailer height while
towing, to avoid overhead damage and
damage to the truck and trailer.
WARNING
Rollover Hazard. Never tow a trailer above
the minimum height required to clear the
landing gear from the ground. Lifting the
fifth wheel and trailer too high raises the
center of gravity and may cause rollover.
WARNING
Control Hazard. Never raise or lower the
boom while the tractor is moving with a
trailer attached.
10. Connect the trailer park brake air line and
the service brake air lines to the trailer.
WARNING
Control Hazard. Always connect both the
service and park brake trailer air lines
when towing a trailer. Never tow trailers
with service or park brakes that are not
functioning properly.
11. If equipped, connect the trailer electrical
cable to the tractor.
12. Apply the foot brake treadle fully and then
push in the parking brake control (yellow)
and the trailer air supply (red); this will
charge the trailer air supply and release
the trailer park brakes.
13. Once the air system is fully charged, shift
the tractor into FORWARD and release
the foot brake treadle. Allow the tractor
to move forward slowly and then recheck
the trailer brakes by applying the foot
brake treadle again to stop the tractor.
14. Move the trailer to the desired location.
WARNING
Rollover Hazard. Do not exceed 15 mph
while towing trailers.
15. Stop the tractor and shift into NEUTRAL,
then pull out on the trailer air supply
control (red). This will apply the trailer
park brakes only.
NOTICE
The parking brake control (yellow) should
remain in with the tractor parking brake
released.
16. Lower the fifth wheel boom until the trailer
landing gear is completely on the ground.
17. Disconnect and the trailer air lines and
electrical cable.
18. Pr
ess and hold the fifth wheel Unlatch
control valve (opening the kingpin jaws)
and then shift the tractor into FORWARD
and slowly move forward away from the
trailer. Once the fifth wheel is clear of
the trailer, release the fifth wheel unlatch
control valve.
