DANGER

he fifth wheel secondary lock must be
engaged during on-highway use of the
vehicle while pulling a trailer. Failure to
engage the secondary lock may allow
the trailer to become separated from the
vehicle and can cause serious personal
injury or death.
basic Trailer Spotting Procedure
SAFETY
INSTRUCTIONS
The following procedures are intended
as guidelines. Always refer to the
specific procedures for your application.
It is the operator’s responsibility to
ensure that proper trailer moving
procedures are followed
1. Ensure air pressure is at a minimum of
120 psi (827 kPa).
2. Check that the fifth wheel boom is in the
full DOWN position.
3. Ensure the fifth wheel jaws are open or in
the unlatched position.
4. Line the tractor up with the front of the
trailer by centering the fifth wheel to the
centerline of the trailer. Ensure the tail
of the fifth wheel is under the trailer skid
ramp.
5. Back the tractor under the trailer until the
fifth wheel is under the front edge of the
trailer skid plate.
6. Keeping your foot firmly on the brake
treadle, shift the tractor into NEUTRAL,
then move the boom control lever up to
raise the trailer until the trailer landing
gear clears the ground. DO NOT raise
the trailer more than is needed to provide
clearance between the trailer landing
gear and the ground.
7. Once adequate ground clearance has
been achieved from the trailer landing
gear, shift the tractor into REVERSE,
release the brake treadle and back into
the kingpin jaws until engagement is felt.
NOTICE
The kingpin jaws of the fifth wheel must
be open before attempting
kingpin engagement.
8. Shift the tractor into FORWARD and
slowly move forward, while ensuring the
kingpin is fully locked before pulling away
under speed.
NOTICE
Move slowly at first and be prepared to
stop in case the fifth wheel jaws have not
fully latched to avoid pulling out from
under and dropping the trailer.
NOTICE
The fifth wheel is equipped with a
secondary lock for on-highway use. To
engage the secondary lock, pull out the
cotter pin located in the fifth wheel
secondary lock release handle to
allow the spring-loaded mechanism
to secure the fifth wheel jaws
(Figure 128). To disengage the secondary
lock for off-highway use, pull out the fifth
wheel secondary lock handle and insert
the cotter pin so that the cotter pin rests
against the outside surface of the fifth
wheel casting flange (Figure 129).
