3. Using a plastic mallet, tap lightly to remove the dif-
ferential cover. Account for an O-ring and a shim.
NOTE: If the cover is difficult to remove, pry on the
cover in more than one recessed location.

4. Place the differential with the open side down; then
lift the housing off the spider assembly. Account for
shim(s) and mark as right-side.

5. Unstake the lock collar; then using the 48 mm Inter-
nal Hex Socket, remove the lock collar securing the
pinion gear assembly.
NOTE: On a front differential, the lock collar has
right-hand threads. On a rear gear case, the lock col-
lar has left-hand threads.

6. Using the Pinion Gear/Shaft Removal Tool and a
hammer, remove the pinion gear from the gear case
housing.
CAUTION
Failure to completely remove the staked material from
the lock collar will result in the destruction of the
threads in the gear case housing.
