a variable power input, ground-loop problems, or electrical noise that could result
in a loss of range or damage to the system.
•
Power inverter
– A power inverter allows AC-powered equipment to be used on vessels
that typically output only DC power.
•
Power strip
– A power strip is essential for simultaneously powering multiple systems
(e.g., the computer, ADP, or any additional equipment that does not run on battery power).
See Note on previous page concerning the use of an isolated power supply.
•
Tool kit
– Having the right screwdrivers, wrenches, and spare fuses is always helpful, espe-
cially if you need to mechanically mount any equipment.
The following items are essential for Standard (§
) systems:
•
Vessel/boat
– A suitable vessel for attaching the mount and conducting the survey.
•
ADP mount
– A non-ferrous, rigid mount is required to mount the ADP to the vessel. Addi-
tional information on mounts for the ADP can be found in §
The RiverCat system (§
) is a relatively self-contained system. The amount of overhead in
setting up and collecting data is generally lower than with the other systems. The following items
are essential for RiverCat systems:
•
Towlines/ropes
– Ropes are needed to tow the RiverCat system from one side of the river to
the other, or to pull the system across from a suspended platform or bridge.
3.12.2.
What other items may be useful to me in the field?
You might find that the following items come in handy when you are in the field.
•
Laser range finders – A sophisticated method of measuring the distance to each bank.
•
Tape measures – For measuring the distance to each bank (when sufficiently short) or the
mounting depth of the system (if you do not have the ATMDS option installed; §
•
Flashlights – For measurements made in low light conditions.
•
Computer display cover – For easier screen viewing in direct sunlight.
•
USB serial connections – To add more serial ports to your computer.
•
Safety lines/ropes – Attached to the ADP in the event it falls overboard.
•
Marine batteries – An additional source of power.
•
Clamps – To hold the mounting in place or to provide additional stability.
•
Duct tape – Always useful!
