Automatic Transducer-Mounting Depth Sensor
The following topics are covered in this section:
•
What is the Automatic Transducer-Mounting Depth Sensor?
•
•
How does the ATMDS work with RiverSurveyor?
•
How do I set up the ATMDS in RiverSurveyor?
3.6.1. What is the Automatic Transducer-Mounting Depth Sensor?
The Automatic Transducer-Mounting Depth Sensor (ATMDS) is an optional feature of the Riv-
erSurveyor package. The ATMDS uses a pressure sensor installed in the ADP transducer head to
automatically measure the depth of the transducer below the water surface. Measuring transducer
head depth is important because this depth value determines where the water current profile be-
gins below the water surface. For discharge measurements, the deeper the transducer head is be-
low the waterline, the larger the area near the surface that is not measured.
3.6.2. How does the ATMDS work?
The ATMDS uses a pressure sensor in the head of the ADP to measure the water pressure. This
sensor is not vented to the atmosphere and therefore must be user-calibrated to remove (or
zero-
out
) the atmospheric pressure before a survey measurement set begins (procedure described in
§
). After the sensor has been zeroed, it will measure the depth of water above the face of the
transducer. As used here, the sensor will only measure the pressure caused by the weight of the
water above it; it is then a simple matter to calculate the depth of the water above the sensor.
Typically, the pressure sensor has a measurement range of 5 m and has an accuracy of
±
0.1% of
full scale. The sensor measures the transducer depth at a rate of once every second (1 Hz).
3.6.3. How does the ATMDS work with RiverSurveyor?
The ATMDS is designed to be used before a measurement set begins to determine the transducer
depth below the water surface. It is best used when the ADP platform (typically a boat) is in
calm water or drifting with the current (i.e., the water-speed relative to the transducer is near
zero). The ATMDS is not designed to be used during an actual measurement. This is because the
sensor will have a tendency to report a depth less than the true depth. (Note: The sensor depth
readings taken while the transducer is in motion relative to the water will be biased low because
of the velocity across the transducer face and because of the water building along the front trans-
ducer face and lowering behind it.) This feature can also be used between measurement runs to
see if the transducer depth has changed. Possible causes of depth change: repositioning ballast in
the vessel, a change of crew members, etc.
RiverSurveyor can accept either a user-entered mounting depth or the depth determined by the
ATMDS. The ATMDS method has several advantages that make it the preferable option when
conducting river discharge measurements.
•
There is no requirement to make a physical measurement of the mounting depth – it is done
automatically. That is, problems associated with physically measuring the transducer
mounting depth are eliminated (e.g., a small boat rolling to one side when someone leans
over to take the measurement; difficulties with reading a ruler under water).
•
Pressure sensor data can be viewed in real-time (in the
Sensor Data
tabular display) and
compared with the
Mounting Depth
setting just before each discharge measurement verify
the transducer depth has not changed previous to the measurement just completed.
