Term Definition 

Connect Mode 

The Bluetooth radio is connected to another Bluetooth radio. 

Standby Mode 

The Bluetooth radio is 

not

 connected to another radio, and it is waiting for command in-

puts from the user. 

Escape 
Sequence 

When a Bluetooth radio is connected, a certain character sequence (***) is required for 
the unit to operate in standby mode. During this mode, the user can communicate with 
the device through the command interface. 

Bluetooth 
Address 

Each Bluetooth radio, the one in the River Surveyor and the one connected to a laptop 
PC, has its own preprogrammed Bluetooth address. When one radio connects to an-
other radio it identifies the device by its unique Bluetooth address, 12 alphanumeric 
characters in length. 

Pairing 

Two devices programmed to connect to one another are considered exclusively paired. 

Master 

Of the two Bluetooth radios, the master radio is assigned its counterpart’s Bluetooth 
address. With a River Surveyor system, the Master radio is connected to the laptop. 

Slave 

The Master radio initiates the connection with the Slave radio. In a River Surveyor sys-
tem the radio inside the River Surveyor box is the Slave radio. 

G-3.  Troubleshooting Tips 

No Communications 

If you are using the serial-to-USB adapter, make sure Windows recognizes the adapter. If Win-
dows does not automatically recognize the adapter, you may need to load the drivers located on 
the RiverSurveyor CD. 

The RiverSurveyor system cannot accept a 

<BREAK>

 command over the airwaves. A 

<BREAK>

 

is generally used to awaken a system that has gone into sleep mode. For RiverSurveyor/RiverCat 
systems, the 

AutoSleep

 command should be set to 

NO

. You may be able to awaken a system by 

sending a sequence of “

+++

” over the radio. This may allow the RiverSurveyor to change modes 

from either 

Deployment

 or 

Data Collection

 to 

Command

 mode. 

Drivers 

Since the Bluetooth device uses a serial port, no specific Bluetooth driver is needed. However, if 
you are using the serial-to-USB adaptor, a CD is provided with the necessary driver information. 

Damaged Bluetooth Radio Modem 

The Bluetooth radio modems cannot be repaired if they are damaged. Consequently, you will 
have to order a replacement from SonTek. SonTek will provide procedures on how to “pair” the 
new modem with the existing modem. 

Bluetooth Radio Modem Distance Exceeds 200 m 

Extending the range of the radio modems may be possible with a directional antenna connected 
to the laptop. However, if you frequently work at ranges greater than 200 m, we recommend you 
consider the FreeWave radio option (available with Mini-ADP and RiverCat systems). 

FreeWave Radio Modem Upgrade 

If the Bluetooth radio set is installed and you wish to upgrade to the FreeWave radio, the system 
must be returned to the factory for radio modem replacement at an additional cost.
