3.1.3. RiverCat Integrated Catamaran System
SonTek’s RiverCat (
Figure 3-6
) is a fully integrated river discharge data
collection system. The RiverCat is designed for use in rivers that are dif-
ficult or unsafe to measure from a boat. The system is typically towed
from a walkway or bridge that spans the river (
Figure 3-7
), or attached to
two lines held by people on either side of the river, or even towed behind
a kayak being rowed across a river/stream. The RiverCat is comprised of
the
RiverSurveyor “Mini” System and an electronics/power supply pack-
age that is housed in a watertight “black box” located on the catamaran. Real-time data from the
RiverCat is sent via radio modems to a computer (usually on the riverbank) running
RiverSur-
veyor software, where it is recorded directly to the computer’s hard drive.
The catamaran disassembles into components that pack easily into a hard-plastic Pelican case. A
clamp attaches the mini-ADP to the front-center brace of the catamaran; the clamp can be loos-
ened (using a single screw) to raise/lower the transducer to an optimum position below the wa-
terline. The case holds the ADP, catamaran (aluminum hulls only), cables, radio modem, batter-
ies, toolbox, and antennas.
A GPS interface is available for use with the RiverCat (most commonly used at survey sites
where there is a “
moving bottom ”). The GPS is connected directly to the ADP, which transmits
both the GPS data string and the water current velocity data through the radio modem. This type
of ADP/GPS integration allows for the use of just one radio modem on the RiverCat.
The RiverSurveyor “Mini” system includes:
