C-2 

Accommodates data-transmission rates from 0 to 20 kpbs/50 ft.  Employs unbalanced signaling, 

and is usually used with a 25-pin D-shaped connector.

 

EIA-485 - 

(Formerly RS-485) Recommended Standard Number 485 as defined by the Electronics 

Industry Association (EIA); a standard that defines a way to move data over a communication link 

which allows up to 64 devices to be connected to the same bus so that each equipment has a bus 
address.  Allows  long  distance  runs  at  high  speeds.  Usually used where one central computer 
controls many different devices. Employs tri-state balanced interface, similar to EIA-422.  The 

connector is not defined. 

EIRP - 

Effective Isotropic Radiated Power; a measure of effective radiated power  

ESD –

 Electrostatic discharge 

Ethernet

, a networking technology developed in the early 1970s that is governed by the IEEE 802.3 

specifications.  It is one of the most popular types of networking technologies.

 

FEC - 

Forward Error Correction; a coding technique that reduces the required signal-to-noise ratio 

(and thus the required satellite EIRP) for a specified error BER performance at the cost of increased 
bandwidth. 

FEC Code Rate - 

the ratio of source data bits to total bits in an encoded version of a source message 

GHz - 

Gigahertz, one billion cycles per second; a measure of frequency or bandwidth 

Hz - 

Hertz; cycles per second 

I&Q – 

In-phase and Quadrature.  Analog signal output of DSP converter

 

I/O -

L-Band -

The equipment or circuit that applies the intelligence (analog audio, digital data) to a 

carrier frequency for transmission.  There are several different methods (modes) of modulating a 
carrier signal including AM, SSB, FM, FSK, PSK, QPSK, and 8PSK.   

MPEG

 - Moving Picture Experts Group. A standard method of transmitting digital video and audio in 

a compressed format using less bandwidth than the traditional analog method. 

MPEG-2

 – Second generation of MPEG.  Better resolution, scalability and handling of interlaced 

video. Improved picture (studio quality and up to HDTV levels) and allows multiple channels at 

various bit rates to be multiplexed into a single data stream. Can transmit multiple programs in the 
same space as a single analog transmission. Officially adopted by ISO and has the catalog number 
ISO 13818-1. 

M2P

 – MPEG-2 Program Stream.
