8.3 RO CLEANING PROCEDURE
8.3.1 Safety notes
Important:
Before carrying out any chemical cleaning procedures read the safety data sheets
supplied with the chemicals and ensure that all necessary protective measures are implemented.
Failure to follow the HMI instructions can lead to equipment damage and present a potential danger
to operating personnel. Ensure that operators are adequately trained to undertake cleaning
operations and that suitable safety equipment is both supplied and used.
It is the responsibility of the end user to determine site specific conditions that may require the
introduction of additional procedures / precautions to those detailed on the HMI screen and in the
instructions below, in order to ensure safe operation of the CIP procedures.
Veolia Water engineers are available to provide assistance in this process if required.
8.3.2 Cleaning Instructions
The recommended cleaning procedure utilises the low pressure clean (CIP1) and is usually most
effective if the membranes are first cleaned with RU3 acid cleaner, followed by RF11 alkaline
cleaner
To initiate CIP1 low pressure cleaning requires Supervisor level security access, as these operations
will interrupt the supply of product water.
The procedure is initiated from the RO Clean screen on the HMI.
All instructions for operation of the CIP sequences are provided on the HMI.
Select
“RO Clean” from the HMI – The RO Clean screen appears and the Orion continues to run.
Select „Shutdown‟ from the screen.
Once the Orion has shut down the „Start Clean‟ can be selected from the screen.
Follow on-screen instructions. Note CIP functions override the inlet conductivity (AIC30-01) high
level set point.
Unit proceeds to Tank Fill stage and TK30-01 fills until flow is cut off by V30-01. Check that PI45-
01 indicates ~0 bar. Fit the CIP by-pass hose between RO permeate and feed tank CIP
connections (CIP3 to CIP1). Close V45-03 fully and check that TK30-01 is full. Use the
„Acknowledge Action Performed‟ button to move to the next stage.
Add Chemicals stage - RO pump (PU30-01) starts up to provide a feed pressure of 7 bar
(adjustable) on PT30-01, by changing the process variable in the PID control function at the PLC
from permeate flow to feed pressure. VA40-02 or VA42-02 is adjusted to achieve the pre-set
recycle flow rate on FT40-02 and VA40-01 is closed fully. VA42-03 if fitted is also opened to the
pre-set flow rate.
When flow and pressure set points are achieved and are stable (over a 1 minute period), follow
HMI instructions to add cleaning chemicals (slowly) to TK30-01 via the observation port in the top
