ALIGNMENT ADJUSTMENT IN ONE DIRECTION MAY DISRUPT ALIGNMENT
ADJUSTMENT IN ANOTHER DIRECTION. CHECK EACH PROCEDURE AFTER
ALTERING ALIGNMENT.
1. Coupled Drives
The axis of the power source and the axis of the pump shaft
must
be aligned
in both the vertical and horizontal planes when using couplings. Consult the
coupling manufacturer’s service documentation for specific clearance or gap
requirements between the driven and driving shafts.
2. Spider Insert-type Couplings
Use calipers to measure dimensions on the circumference of the outer ends
of the coupling hub every 90º when aligning spider insert-type couplings. The
coupling is only in perfect alignment when hub ends are spaced evenly at all
points (Figure 19).

3. Non-Spider Type Couplings
Use a feeler or taper gauge between coupling halves every 90º to align non-
spider type couplings. The coupling is only in perfect alignment when hubs
are equidistant to each other at every point. (Refer to manufacturers
instructions).
Ensure the coupling adjustment is parallel by laying a straightedge across the
top of both coupling rims, along the side and the bottom. The coupling is in
an accurate horizontal parallel alignment when the straightedge lies evenly
on both halves of the coupling.
