CHAPTER 11: CASTERS, FORKS AND CASTER PIN LOCKS

WARNING

The threads on the Allen screw that connects the two halves of the Frog Legs® are treated with Loctite® 242, a medium

strength thread lock. If you loosen this Allen screw, you MUST remove and reapply Loctite® 242 or an equivalent medium

strength thread lock.

If you ignore this Warning, your footrest could become loose or fall off and you could fall, tip over or

lose control of the wheelchair and seriously injure yourself or others or damage the wheelchair.

Replacing Frog Legs

Tools Needed:

• Two 5/32” Allen Wrenches

• 7/16” Open End Wrench

1. Remove the two Allen screws, axle (attached to one Allen screw), washers and C-Spring that secure the caster to the

fork. Use one 5/32” Allen wrench to hold one screw in place and a second Allen wrench to loosen the other screw. See

Figure 11-11.

2. Remove the caster and spacers from the fork.

3. Completely remove the Allen screw, washers and locknut that secure the “Bullet” Caster Housing. See Figure 11-11.

4. Slide the “Bullet” Caster Housing (and attached Frog Leg

fork) out of the caster mount and remove the dowel.

5. Insert the dowel into the new “Bullet” Caster Housing attached to the new Frog Leg

fork and slide it into the caster

mount.

6. Insert the Allen screw through the washer and into the caster mount, making sure it slides through the notch in the

“Bullet” Caster Housing and threads into the hole in the dowel.

7. Slide on the second washer and tighten the locknut finger-tight.

8. Reinstall the casters removed in Steps 1 and 2. Securely tighten the two screws so there is no space between the

caster, the spacers and the fork sides. Use one Allen wrench to hold one screw in place and securely tighten the other

screw with the second Allen wrench. See Figure 11-11.

9. Follow the procedures under “Adjustable Angle Fork” on page 11-4 to square the caster.
