IFBs (Interrupted Fold Back)
IFB is a method for a keypanel operator to interrupt an audio source that someone is listening to and then talk to that
listener. When the keypanel operator is finished talking and turns off the IFB key, the original audio source "folds
back", or reconnects, to the listener. IFB could be used to interrupt background music on a PA system while someone
is paging. Mostly, though it is used in broadcasting to cue talent, such as news anchors, field reporters, etc.
ADAM and ADAM CS intercom systems are capable of four variations of IFB:
•
Standard one-way IFB, where the keypanel operator only needs to talk to the listener.
•
Two-way IFB, where the keypanel operator can talk and monitor the talent during IFB operation.
•
Two-way IFB, where the keypanel operator can talk and several people can monitor the talent over an
external speaker or other device during IFB operation.
•
Tone override IFB, which uses an external control box and a 2400 kHz tone to control IFB operation. This
type of IFB requires specialized equipment and is not generally used.
