Chapter 3: Installation
Advisories
Rinsing Down the Analyzer
The basis of measurement for the Boron Analyzer is differential conductivity. Consequently, the Analyzer's
operation depends upon low background conductivity. It is common for the Analyzer, following the initial
installation, to experience high-sample conductivity (low resistivity) values as internal and external tubing
“rinse down.” It is expected that the Analyzer will “reset” itself during the initial start-up as it attempts to rinse
itself down. In this state, the Analyzer will not fully execute its countdown to sample measurement beyond
the first 2 or 3 minutes until sample resistivity rises above 15 MΩ-cm. The display on the front of the
Analyzer should indicate a “Low Sample Resistivity” condition. This is NOT an indication that the process
water being sampled has low resistivity; this is a consequence of sample coming in contact with new
sample tubing. This is normal for the first several hours of operation and should clear after that, allowing the
Analyzer to conduct a full countdown to sample measurement. The Analyzer should be allowed to rinse
down for approximately 12-24 hours before readings can be considered stable.
Rinse-down of the Analyzer prepares the Analyzer for boron analysis by:
• Removing entrained CO
2
from the internal wetted components
• Allowing the reagent pump to fully prime
• Allowing air bubbles in the reagent and zero columns to be vented
• Allowing the reagent to flow through the reagent column to de-ionize it
Ensuring Sufficient Sample Pressure
If the Analyzer is started in
Analysis
and the line pressure, at the Analyzer, is less than 20 psi, the
Analyzer will detect a low sample-pressure condition, stop analysis, and display a message of low or no
flow on the screen. (If pressure is being read at the sample point, 25-30 psi may be required in order to
account for error associated with a pressure gauge and pressure drop in the sample line.) On single-
stream units, the Analyzer will restart analysis when there is sufficient pressure; on multistream units, the
Analyzer will advance to the next available sample stream and start analysis on that stream.
