Chapter 7 - Testing Power Tools of Under 10 Inch-
Pound Capacity
Power tools of less than 10 Inch-Pound capacity should be tested without the use of a joint
simulator. This includes clutch, stall, bypass, and pulse-type power tools. Tools of this
capacity range are the only tools which should be tested without a joint simulator. Impact
wrenches may not be tested on
Torq-Tronics

.
This procedure assumes the tester has been installed per the instructions in Chapter 2.
Gathering Joint Information
This section addresses obtaining the information necessary to select the correct filter for use
in testing the power tool on your
Torq-Tronics

. Use the tool to be tested to tighten the
actual joint the tool will be used on. Insure the tool is used just as it will be once the test is
finished. Use a direct reading torque wrench to check the installation torque.
*
Mark the fastener location. The photographs which follow demonstrate one technique
for acquiring the joint information. In the first photograph in this demonstration
sequence, a 3" x 5" card has been cut to fit over the fastener, and a socket placed over
the fastener.
*
Use a pen, marker, or other device to make a line on the fas-
tener or socket and the surface against which it is tightened.
In this first photograph , the mark for the starting point has
been made on the socket and card.
*
Attach the torque wrench to the socket or
bit In the second photograph, the torque
wrench (dial) has been attached to the
socket without moving it. The torque
measurement is ready to be made.
