Connection panels on the system unit
Connecting the 1/2" magnetic tape unit
Your MX300-50/-60 must be equipped with a type 97835-430 adapter if you want to
connect a 1 /2" magnetic tape unit.
If this adapter type is fitted, two 5-meter cables lead out of the connection panel of the
system unit. Connect these cables to the tape unit as described in the operating
manual for the unit.
Connecting external SCSI devices
External SCSI devices, such as SCSI hard disk drives, CD ROM and WORM drives or
jukeboxes, are connected to a SCSI port of the system unit as described in the
operating manual supplied with the device. Several SCSI devices (with the exception of
the 9082 Jukebox) can be connected in series (daisy-chained). In other words, the first
device is connected to the SCSI port of your system, the second device is connected
to the first, and so on. Theoretically, up to eight devices can be daisy-chained,
including the system unit. Please note that the maximum length of the SCSI connecting
cable is:
- 6 m for a single-ended SCSI bus
- 25 m for a differential-ended SCSI bus.
These are maximum lengths and must take account of the cable lengths within the
devices themselves. The internal cable length within an MX300 is 0.80m. Refer to the
technical specifications for the other devices in order to establish the internal cable
lengths.
A free SCSI port is normally capped by an external terminator forming the required
terminating point for the SCSI bus. Without this terminator, SCSI devices cannot be
guaranteed to function reliably, so
always remember to use the terminator.
• At the system unit:
Use the special SCSI cable to connect up the SCSI device.
Note: If you attach a SCSI device to the wrong type of host adapter, you could
damage the device.
Only the add-on unit for SCSI disk drives can be connected to
a
type
2 SCSI host adapter. All other devices must be connected to a
type
1
adapter.
Ask your sales representative about the combination options for SCSI controllers
and SCSI terminal devices.
