Tape cartridges
1 /4" tape cartridges
Tape cartridges are easily transportable high-capacity data storage media.
Use only those cartridges listed in the “Accessories" section in the appendix (see
page 72).
Service life of tape cartridges:
The service life of the cartridges depends on the number of head passes. The number
of head passes is proportional to the volume of data read or written.
The following guidelines should be applied:
- approx. 130 head passes for 150-MB tapes
- approx. 650 head passes for 30-MB tapes.
How to handle tape cartridges:
- Always keep cartridges in their boxes when not in use.
- Store cartridges for about 4 hours at ambient temperature prior to use.
- Never expose cartridges to direct sunlight or heat
(ideal temperature for storage is between +5° C and +45° C).
- Never bring them into contact with magnetic objects.
- Never use cleaning solutions or solvents on them.
- Never touch the tape itself.
Enable physical write protection for tape cartridges
• You can protect your tape cartridges against inadvertent erasure or overwriting as
follows:
Turn the write protection mechanism (using a coin) so that the arrow points to
SAFE (see Fig. 20).
