3.7.4 Measured value output for a 5-echo reflected pulse
The LMS500 Series can measure up to 5 reflected pulses (echoes). The measured values
can be output in the measured value message or used in the field application according to
the Global Filter settings (see
section 3.7.2 “Filter” on page 25 ). Several echoes can be
produced, e.g. if the LMS sender pulse hits several rain drops, fog, glass, etc. These
conditions can reflect part of the energy hence creating reflected pulses or echoes. Most of
the sending pulse energy will continue to propagate and will eventually reflect against the
actual target object. This final pulse could be up to 5 received echoes.

If the Global Filter is set to First Echo, the LMS500 will only take the first echo into account
and ignore all following echoes.
With All Echoes the scanner will receive up to 5 echoes. It will display all of them in the
SOPAS monitor function and output all the 5 echo values received in the measured value
message (no values will be displayed as 0). The Last Echo will also receive up to 5 echoes
however it will only display the last echo received, ignoring any previous echoes, and output
in the measured value message as only one value.
In bad weather conditions (rain/snow/fog), this filter can produce better results or actually
make possible special applications such as measurement through a window.
In such applications a slight inclination of the glass of scanner is recommended to avoid any
direct reflections (mirror effect).
