How Marks Are Calculated
In the last column of the Record Book, you will see the overall mark for the time
period you are viewing (the entire school year or a specific term).
By default, AccelTest calculates marks by dividing points earned by the points
possible on each assignment. The software then chooses the appropriate letter
mark based on the scale you have chosen in the Grading Scale preference.
Term, Semester and Final Grades (Marks)
Term marks are derived from the assignment scores. Semester marks (if used) are
computed by averaging term marks. Final grades (marks) for the year are
computed using semester or trimester marks if there is no final exam. (If there are
no semesters in the school year, only term marks are used.)
For example:
1st Term Mark
81%
2nd Term Mark
75%
3rd Term Mark
82%
Final Grade (Mark)
(81% + 75% + 82%)
÷
3 = 79%
The Exam preference settings determine how final exam marks are included in the
mark calculation. (See page 137). For example, if final exams are 30% of the term
mark, and a student earned 75% on the exam:
Term Mark
81%
×
70 = 56.7%
Final Exam
75%
×
30 = 22.5%
Mark (including exam)
56.7% + 22.5% = 79.2%
If final exams are 20% of a semester mark (if available), and a student earned 72%
on the exam:
Semester Mark
78%
×
80 = 62.4%
Final Exam
72%
×
20 = 14.4%
Mark (including Exam)
62.4% + 14.4% = 76.8%
You may choose different categories, weights and grading options for each term in
the school year. This gives you the flexibility to change how you compute marks
during the course of the school year.
The Exam
preference is
ignored if there are
no exams in the grading
period.
