Phase Cont r ol technology pr ovides cohe r ent sound
r e pr oduction th r ough the use of p hase matching

o p timal sound image. The default setting is on and we
r ecommend leaving Phase Cont r ol switched on fo r all
sound sou r ces.
1 Set the remote control to the receiver operation
mode.
• Press PHASE CTRL (PHASE CONTROL) to switch on
phase correction.

Better sound using Phase Control and
Full Band Phase Control
(SC-37 only)
This r eceive r is equi pp ed with the two ty p es of functions
that co rr ect p hase disto r tion and g r ou p delay: Phase
Cont r ol and Full Band Phase Cont r ol. Activating Full
Band Phase Cont r ol is st r ongly r ecommended because it
also involves the effects of Phase Cont r ol.
The Full Band Phase Cont r ol featu r e calib r ates the
f r equency- p hase cha r acte r istics of the s p eake r s
connected.
Standa r d s p eake r s designed exclusively fo r audio use
gene r ally r e pr oduce sound with the divided f r equency
bands out p ut f r om a s p eake r system consisting of
multi p le s p eake r s (in case of ty p ical 3-way s p eake r s, fo r
instance, the tweete r , the squawke r (mid r ange), and the
woofe r out p ut sound in the high-, middle-, and low-
f r equency r anges, r es p ectively). Though these s p eake r s
a r e designed to flatten the f r equency-am p litude
cha r acte r istics ac r oss wide r anges, the r e a r e cases
whe r e the g r ou p delay cha r acte r istics a r e not effectively
flattened. This p hase disto r tion of the s p eake r s
subsequently causes g r ou p delay (the delay of low-
f r equency sound against high-f r equency sound) du r ing
audio signal p layback.
This r eceive r analyzes the f r equency- p hase
cha r acte r istics of the s p eake r s by measu r ing test signals
out p ut f r om the s p eake r s with the su pp lied mic r o p hone,
the r efo r e flattening the analyzed f r equency- p hase
cha r acte r istics du r ing audio signal p layback

– the same
co rr ection is made fo r a p ai r of left and r ight s p eake r s.
This co rr ection minimizes g r ou p delay between the
r anges of a s p eake r and im pr oves the f r equency- p hase
cha r acte r istics ac r oss all r anges.
Fu r the r mo r e, the enhanced f r equency- p hase
cha r acte r istics between channels ensu r e bette r
su rr ound sound integ r ation fo r multichannel setting.

1 • Phase matching is a ve r y im p o r tant facto r in achieving pr o p e r sound r e pr oduction. If two wavefo r ms a r e ‘in p hase’, they c r est and t r ough
togethe r , r esulting in inc r eased am p litude, cla r ity and pr esence of the sound signal. If a c r est of a wave meets a t r ough, then the sound will
be ‘out of p hase’ and an un r eliable sound image will be pr oduced.
• The
PHASE CONTROL
featu r e is available even when the head p hones a r e p lugged in.
• If you r subwoofe r has a p hase cont r ol switch, set it to the p lus (+) sign (o r 0°). Howeve r , the effect you can actually feel when
PHASE CONTROL
is set to
ON
on this r eceive r de p ends on the ty p e of you r subwoofe r . Set you r subwoofe r to maximize the effect. It is also
r ecommended you t r y changing the o r ientation o r the p lace of you r subwoofe r .
• Set the built-in low p ass filte r switch of you r subwoofe r to off. If this cannot be done on you r subwoofe r , set the cutoff f r equency to a highe r
value.
• If the s
p eake r distance is not pr o p e r ly set, you may not have a maximized
PHASE CONTROL
effect.
• The
PHASE CONTROL
mode cannot be set to
ON
in the following cases:
– When the
PURE DIRECT
mode is switched on.
– When
MULTI CH IN
in p ut is selected.
– When the
HDMI
audio out p ut p a r amete r is set to

4 The Full Band Phase Ctrl mode cannot be set to ON in the following cases:
