Handling and Using GI Cable
Appendix D
The Optical Fiber Cable’s characteristics will deteriorate if the cable remains under tension for a long period, so
be sure to release the tension after installing the cable.

Bending Radius
The minimum bending radius for Optical Fiber Cable is generally about 10 times the cable’s diameter. Bending
the cable in a smaller radius can increase its transmission loss or break the fiber completely. Bends in the con-
duit must be at least 20 times the cable’s diameter due to the tension member’s characteristics.
When reusing existing conduit, take steps such as installing pull boxes at sharp turns to avoid damaging the
cables.
Splicing Optical Fiber Cables
There are two methods that can be used to splice Optical Fiber Cables.
Fused Connection
With this method, the ends of the fibers are brought together and fused by applying heat from an electrical arc
or other source. This method can provide a low-loss and stable connection; it can be used in a variety of appli-
cations including spicing cables and attaching a cable to a connector with an attached cord.
Special equipment and skills are required for this technique, so this project must be contracted to an Optical
Fiber Cable manufacturer or company specializing in fiber-optic cable repairs.
Example
Connector Connection
If a connector is attached to the optical fiber, the fiber can be connected easily with a connector adapter.
Example
This connection is easy to connect and disconnect, but it can have a relatively high transmission loss so there
must be excess capacity in the system.
