System Messaging Platform Reference Guide
Crash dump information
All crash dump information is captured, encrypted, and stored in a log file for
debugging purposes. The time of crash dump occurrence is also captured. Crash
dump information is only retained when logging to a PCMCIA. This information
is not saved to DRAM.
Log file modifications
SMP changes the way syslog files are captured and named.
Log file
Both hardware and software messages are captured in the same, single log file.
This log file is simultaneously saved to DRAM and the <value> (if available).
Table 4
SMP severity levels
Severity level
Definition
INFO
Information only. No action is required.
ERROR
A non-fatal condition has occurred. You may be required to take
appropriate action.
For example, an error message is generated when the system is unable
to lock onto the semaphore before initialization of the IP addresses
configured for the SMP log file transfer to a remote host.
WARNING
A non-fatal condition has occurred. No immediate action is needed.
FATAL
A fatal condition has occurred that the system cannot recover from
without rebooting.
For example, a fatal message is generated when the configuration
database is corrupted.
Note:
Nortel strongly recommends logging on to a PCMCIA and
keeping a PCMCIA in each CPU at all times. The DRAM has limited
memory allocated to SMP. DRAM logs are stored in a circular list, which
overwrites older log messages when the log fills up and the DRAM log
does not contain any encrypted information, which may limit the
information available during troubleshooting.
